Mini-Guide To Rome

Rome is a city which has enjoyed a reputation as the place to come for thousands of years. In Roman times there was a saying that all roads lead to Rome and when you visit this very ancient, exciting and dynamic city you will see why this saying came to be, for it is indeed a place that everyone ought to visit at least once. Since the days of the ancient Roman Empire Rome is a place which has been regarded as very important and has had great status; today this is no different. It is the capital city of Italy and has around 2.7 million residents. It has a very warm Mediterranean climate and this makes it a popular all year round destination. Transport in Rome really has to be public transport or taxis. Only the very brave would drive in Rome! There is quite a comprehensive underground system which is known as the Rome Metro. There is also a suburban railway overground system, as well as trams and buses. All of these are relatively easy to follow and there is a fare system which is integrated, allowing one ticket for all.

As you may expect from a city with the history that Rome has there is a lot to see and do here. In fact there is too much to see and do for most visitors, which is why people come back over and over again. One of the things which you will wish to visit is probably the Coliseum. This is one of the most famous images of Rome and it is amazing to think that it was built in around 70-80 BC. It was actually the biggest amphitheatre built in the days of the Roman Empire and was capable of accommodating up to 60,000 spectators. The Roman Forum is also another must see' since this was the place where the Ancient Romans administered their judicial system. Many other ancient sights can be viewed all over Rome and then you can move on to the medieval sights and then of course there are the historic sights of the last 500 years. This is without mentioning the numerous art galleries and museums! So it is easy to see why it is almost impossible to list all the things that you should see when in Rome. However, as the old saying goes When in Rome, do as the Romans do' and this is still true. For modern Romans are very proud of their heritage, but they live firmly in the 21st Century and they enjoy all the trappings which that brings. You should therefore make sure that you take time to watch the very glamorous and sophisticated Romans go about their daily business, whilst you sip an espresso at a pavement cafe and you should enjoy a long, leisurely lunch, just as they do and then do a little shopping and simply savour the experience of Rome in the 21st Century. It really is a joy for all the senses.
