Rival airport owner says it would be interested in Gatwick Airport

Tuesday 06 May 2008 8:31pm

The owner of Manchester, East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside airports, the Manchester Airports Group (MAG), has expressed an interest in buying London's Gatwick airport if BAA was interested, or forced to sell it. BAA owns many of the biggest airports in the UK including London Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. It has come under criticism recently after being given the go-ahead to raise prices, that it is slow to move and is stiffling airport growth in the UK. MAG's Chief Executive told the BBC in a radio interview on Radio 4 that it would be interested only if there was a sensible price tag on the airport. Experts have estimated the Gatwick airport to be worth £2 billion and if BAA was forced to be broken up, Gatwick would be the most likely to be sold. BAA's increase in prices means that airlines will be charged up to 23% for each passenger they carry when landing at its airports. Airlines will not be able to absorb the whole of this cost increase so will have to pass on the increased costs to passengers in the form of more expensive tickets.
