easyHotels to come to Glasgow

Tuesday 10 Mar 2009 6:58am

Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder of budget airline EasyJet, is making preparations to open the first easyHotel in Scotland later this year, after planning permission is granted for the planned Glasgow site. The proposed site for the seven-story Glasgow easyHotel is right next to an existing branch of the rival hotel chain, Travelodge. The close proximity of the two hotels is expected to start a price war, with Travelodge currently charging £40 a night for a double room compared to easyHotel's £24. 50 per room charge in London. easyHotel's commercial director, Calum Russell, said: 'The planning application is being processed and approval is expected shortly. There will be approximately 130 rooms in the hotel and, subject to planning, work will begin in April. ' easyHotels provide basic, but cheap accommodation. There are 10 easyHotels around Europe already, including six in London, two in Switzerland, one in Cyprus and one in Hungary. Experts believe that the arrival of the easyHotel is good news for guests and the city of Glasgow, as the competition with existing hotels will make Glasgow city breaks more affordable. President of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Claire Dunning, said: 'This will be a strong addition to Glasgow's city centre hotel scene. The 25 jobs it will bring are also very welcome at this time. '
