Guide to Palma in Spain

Friday 03 May 2013 9:25am

Palma is the capital of the Spanish island Mallorca, and a great destination for people looking to have a sunny, Mediterranean vacation without spending a huge amount of money. The fine food, architecture, lovely beaches and increased flights have made this a great place to be this summer. Flights: The main airport for Mallorca is Palma de Mallorca Airport which is just a 20 minute drive from Palma. The airport is a hub for many different airlines, including budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet. Two other Balearic Islands – Ibiza and Minorca – also have their own airports. For international flights to Mallorca, it is possible to fly into Barcelona, Madrid or Valencia and take one of the daily domestic connections. For connections from other major European cities, look into the no-frills charter operators. These flights go into Palma and are frequent during the summer months. Getting Around: Once you are on the island, you have the option of getting around by bus, taxi, train or boat. Be careful of taxis, however, as they can be quite costly for longer journeys. Taking a boat is the best way to see other islands as most of the major resorts and beaches are connected by water-taxi services. There are also ferries that connect mainland Spain with the islands. Things to Do: One of the best things to do when you arrive in Palma is to explore by foot. The streets vary from little, winding cobblestone alleyways to the impressive promenades of the Rambla. Check out La Seu cathedral, the Parc de la Mar, arcaded Plaa Major and the Museu d'Art Espanyol Contemporani. Remember to stop into small, local restaurants to sample tasty tapas, Mediterranean foods and local drinks. During warm summer days, head out of the city to explore lovely sandy beaches or take a ferry to explore other Balearic Islands nearby. When to Go: The peak months for the Balearic Islands are July and August when the weather is hot and the days are long. This also means that most beaches are incredibly crowded during this time. For good weather, anytime between May and October is a good time to go. During the winter the islands are much quieter and the weather is too cold for the beach. However, the weather is fine for people looking to go hiking, play golf or just explore. If you are looking for a city break, Palma is one of the best places for you to explore. With more flights to the city than ever, getting to Palma is cheap and easy. Plus, while the Balearic Islands are popular in the summer, the city stays relatively quiet as most people head out to the beach resorts. It’s a truly beautiful city, with lots to do, see, eat and drink. Be sure to look for flights early and check out the different airports that fly into Palma to get the best possible deal on your upcoming trip.
