New Beijing airport terminal opens in preparation for Olympic games in August

Monday 03 Mar 2008 8:22pm

Beijing's new airport has officially been opened - at a cost of $3. 6 billion US Dollars. With the 2008 Olympic games getting nearer, the new airport terminal was developed to cope with the millions of visitors that will come to the Chinese city to see the Olympic games. Following Chinese tradition, the airport looks like a dragon from the outside - and from the air. The new building has a 2 mile long concourse with a shuttle train and the new terminal alone will allow an additional 23 million people a year to use the airport - with the entire airport capable of handling over 76 million passengers a year. Only a small number of airlines will be able to use the new terminal immediately - although the number of airlines will increase in the coming months. The main airlines currently using the newly opened terminal are: British Airwards, El-al-Israel Airlines, Qantas and Qatar Airways. China's booming economy and low prices are encouraging more chinese people to take a flight on a plane - with over 200 million expected to take to the skies this year.
