BAA ordered to sell three airports

Monday 19 Jan 2009 9:29am

Passengers could get a more pleasant airport experience as one of the largest airport operators in the world, BAA, has been ordered to sell three of its seven UK airports, which include Gatwick and Stansted, in a bid to improve airport competition. The Competition Commission followed its ruling that BAA may be forced to sell some domestic airports back in August, by revealing that passengers would benefit most from the operator selling Gatwick, Stansted and Edinburgh Airports. The Competition Commission explained the ruling, saying: 'Under separate ownership, the airport operators including BAA, will have a much greater incentive to be far more responsive to their customers, both airlines and passengers. ' While the current ruling will entitle BAA to hold onto Heathrow Airport, which handles more than 67 million passengers a year, the operator has questioned the Competition Commission's decision and will attempt to persuade the watchdog to change the ruling before a final report is published in February or March next year. Under pressure to create greater competition, BAA has already put Gatwick Airport on the market, with interested Australian and German operators linked with possible £1. 8 billion takeovers.
