Melbourne is, like so many other Australian cities, a city which is dynamic, full of vitality and energy, and yet it also has a very unique identity and flavour. It has a real sense of style, with elegant dining, a thriving arts scene, as well as some wonderful shops, with Melbourne enjoying a reputation as the best place to shop in Australia. Despite the fact that it is located on the south eastern part of Australia it is very much a city which looks outwards. It is the second largest city in Australia with almost 3.5 million people, it is a city which is very relaxed and with a convivial atmosphere. Enjoying a low crime rate, Melbourne is a multi cultural city which is also very global in its outlook. For three times now it has been recognised as one of the top cities in which to live, not just in Australia, but in the world. Melbourne has money, excellent social conditions, a renowned transport system and a healthy community. It is also a real centre for both commerce and industry and with some excellent sporting venues, there really is something which will excite and satisfy travellers, whatever their tastes.
The climate in Melbourne is also quite hospitable. It does have some dry, hot summers, but generally the temperature is less intense than in some Australian locations. Given just how sophisticated and vibrant Melbourne is, there really is so much to see and do that you will find it difficult to choose. Anyone who is into sport will find a fantastic range of things to see. Melbourne is home to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, so if you visit between April and September there is bound to be an Australian Rules football match that you can catch. If you come during the summer then you can see some of the cricket matches. There are quite a few museums and art galleries to visit. Perhaps the most famous is the Melbourne Museum, with its wide range of exhibits, including a racehorse which has been preserved for over 70 years! For lovers of the arts, Melbourne is a really exciting place to visit, with lots of galleries including the National Gallery of Victoria, which is the biggest art collection in Australia. The Melbourne Observation Deck gives some absolutely amazing views of the city and at some 237 metres high the views really are panoramic. Fans of historic architecture will also find some very carefully restored and preserved buildings in the city, which gives it a real sense of history despite the fact that it only dates from Victorian times. The nightlife in Melbourne is also full of energy and there is plenty to do, from enjoying a candle light dinner for two, to dancing the night away in one of the many nightclubs which cater for all musical tastes. So whatever you enjoy and whatever your interests are, Melbourne is sure to offer you the trip of a lifetime. It really is one destination not to be missed when in Australia.
