New security measure trials at Manchester Airport

Monday 01 Sep 2008 9:11am

Manchester Airport is the first UK airport to take part in a pilot scheme for new identity procedures aimed at improving airline security. Thousands of passengers bound for destinations such as Malta and Ibiza are the guinea pigs for the test procedures in which one of 11 walk-in machines scans their faces and checks the scan automatically against their passports. The machines work by taking a photograph of each passenger and matching it up to the picture in their passport. As well as providing a boost for security at UK airports, it is hoped that the scanning system will also help to reduce passenger congestion during security checks. While the walk-in machines take 13 to 15 seconds to process a passenger, human face to face checks take an average of 20 seconds. A UK Border Agency spokesperson commented: 'The UK is undergoing the biggest shake-up in its borders for nearly 40 years, Britain's border security is now among the toughest in the world. '
