Spain was the top destination for Scots in 2008

Sunday 25 Jan 2009 8:38am

Airport operator BAA Scotland has just released figures showing that Spain was the overseas travel destination of choice among Scots in 2008. The resorts of Alicante, Malaga, Tenerife and Palma featured in the top ten destinations from Aberdeen Airport, Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow Airport last year. Overall, more than 1. 2 million passengers flew from BAA's three airports in Scotland to Spain. The second most popular country for Scottish air travellers was the Netherlands, followed by Ireland, France and Germany. Donald Morrison, a BAA Scotland spokesman, said: 'It seems that Spain is as popular now with Scots as it has ever been and with the top three most popular countries unchanged from last year, you could argue that we are becoming creatures of habit. 'However, with France and Germany knocking the US – traditionally one of our most popular tourist markets – into sixth place and Norway entering the top ten for the first time, perhaps tastes are beginning to change. ' New York's Newark Airport was the leading long-haul location for travellers flying from Scottish airports, while Amsterdam Airport proved to be the most popular single flight destination in 2008.
