Quantas tops 60 years of flights between UK and Australia

Monday 03 Dec 2007 10:10am

Its been 60 years since Quantas flew its first flight from the UK to Australia. Sydney to London was the first flight with just 29 passengers and 11 crew members. With six stops need along the way at Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo and Tripoli, the flight in 1947 took 55 hours. The route was aptly named the Kangaroo Route. Today, Quantas fly Boeing 747-400 aircraft which with only one stopover take just 23 hours to fly to the other side of the world. Although a tiring 23 hour journey, passengers do receive several meals on board and the inflight entertainment helps to pass the time. For those passengers who can afford business-class or first class tickets, comfort is second to none with comfortable seats that recline almost flat for you to get a decent sleep. Pacific based Quantas offers numerous flights around the world including flights from London to several Australian cities as well as Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore - a popular stop-off point for travellers.
