UK passengers prefer to use Ryanair than British Airways

Monday 27 Jul 2009 7:41am

More Passengers at UK airports are using Ryanair, according to recent figures from the economy carrier. A nine per cent increase in Ryanair's May passenger numbers contrasts to an eight per cent fall in British Airways' (BA). 5. 5 million people chose to fly with Ryanair in the month of May, as opposed to just 1. 7 million who flew with BA. Stephen McNamara, head of communications at Ryanair, cited the company's low fares and punctuality for drawing more business travellers away from their rival. As explanation for their success and increase Mr McNamara said, 'Passengers opt for Ryanair's guaranteed lowest fares and no fuel surcharge over BA's high fares and greedy fuel surcharges'. This comes after the publicity coup the carrier enjoyed after the revelation that Queen Sofia of Spain flew from Spain to Stansted Airport for just £13 on one of their flights. Plans by the airline to charge passengers for using the toilet, and to ask them to load their own bags onto the airplane lower costs were criticised by Stansted Airport officials this week.
