Record snowfall lifts European ski destinations

Tuesday 27 Jan 2009 9:26pm

Record snowfalls and cheap holiday deals have seen winter sports enthusiasts flock in large numbers to ski resorts across Europe. The credit crunch has been cited as the reason for the amount of vacant accommodation in and around ski areas, which has subsequently caused many hotels and chalets to cut prices. Skiers in the Swiss resorts of Saas-Fee and Andermatt were particularly lucky, enjoying up to 11ft of snow. Geneva is seeing an increase in visitors hoping to get the best snow for many years. Publisher of Snow magazine, Graeme Spratley, said: 'I have friends in Sauze d'Oulx in Italy who say it usually looks like Basingstoke in December but this year it's thick with snow. 'If you've got the money, it's a great year. There is no shortage of bargains. ' The information manager for the Ski Club of Great Britain, Al Morgan, also said: 'If you're willing to leave it late and are pretty free to go anywhere, there are great deals. ' Mr Morgan added that he had successfully booked a skiing trip for a week half-board for £150.
