No mercy for latecomers flying from new Terminal 5 at Heathrow

Tuesday 29 Jan 2008 12:06am

British Airways's new Terminal 5 opens in March and its changing the requirements for airport security which is guaranteed to cause aggrevation and problems for passengers. The new requirement is that passengers have to pass through airport security atleast 35 minutes before take-off. If they arrive even seconds late, they will be denied access to the boarding gates. Automated machines that scan boarding passes will stop passengers if they are outside the 35 minute window - regardless of the reason why. Even if the queues at airport security delayed them, there are no exceptions. A summer of complications is expected while passengers get used to the new systems - which also include computerised check-in to replace to conventional check-in desks. Domestic flights will require passengers to have a fingerprint scan athe security gate. A spokesman for British Airways said "Its hard to speculate what might happen".
