Hand luggage rules relaxed at some UK airports

Tuesday 08 Jan 2008 10:37am

Yesterday's changing of restrictions on hand luggage has been welcomed across the aviation industry - although passenger groups have called the new rules confusing. The rules up to yesterday, 7th January 2008 were set by the UK's department of Transport and stated that passengers are only allowed to take on piece of luggage on board a plane. This The new rules allows more than one item to be taken on board - but it doesn't apply to all airports, nor to all airlines. BAA, the UKs biggest airport operator, is following the new regulations across its 7 airports with the exception of Gatwick which will change later this year. At airports such as Heathrow, even with the relaxed restrictions, airlines such as easyJet are still enforcing the one item rule. Passengers should check with their airline before flying as to what the exact rules are for their flight. The relaxed rules is expected to reduce the amount of chaos at airport security that has been seen across all airports since the one item rule was brought into place. The rules do not change the restriction on liquids and this is likely to remain in place for some time to come.
