Bad weather causes havoc for air travel

Wednesday 11 Feb 2009 1:37pm

Additional snowfall in parts of the UK has caused further disruption for travellers at a number of the country's airports. February 4th saw 20 centimetres of snow in some areas, which led to the temporary closure of runways at Birmingham Airport, Cardiff Airport, East Midlands Airport and Luton Airport. Disruption continued into February 5th, although passengers were being advised to check-in as normal as runways were expected to be reopened as soon as they were clear of snow. A spokeswoman for Birmingham Airport described the difficulties airport managers were having with keeping runways clear: 'It was like painting the Forth Bridge - as soon as you cleared the runway or the tarmac it was still coming down. ' Weather experts have forecast that there will be a mixture of rain, sleet and snow for many places tomorrow, before easing up on Saturday. Earlier this week, heavy snowfall led caused London City Airport, Luton Airport and Southampton Airport to close, as well as widespread delays and cancellations at other UK airports.
