League of airlines with worst baggage delays

Sunday 24 Feb 2008 11:28pm

A report by the AUC (Air Transport Users Council) has detailed the worst airlines for baggage problems across Europe in 2007. In 2006, British Airways was the worst offender, but in 2007, it got even worse and lost on average 26. 5 bags per 1000 passengers - this compares to "just" 23 bags lost in 2006. The league of 10 top worst offenders for delayed or lost baggage are: 1. TAP Air Portgual: 27. 8 bags 2. British Airways: 26. 5 bags 3=. KLM: 19. 7 bags 3=. Alitalia: 19. 7 bags 5. Air France: 17. 6 bags 6. Luxair: 17. 2 bags 7. BMI: 7 bags 8=. Finnair: 15. 8 bags 8=. Lufthansa: 15. 8 bags 10. Spanair: 15. 4 bags Lost and delayed baggage causes passengers stress and its not too much to expect for travellers to collect their luggage from the airport after their flight. The "one piece of hand luggage" rule introduced in August 2006 has increased the amount of checked-in luggage, this can be seen to be increasing the statistics. The report also said that the majority of lost luggage happens on connecting flights through airports such as Heathrow or Gatwick. Its estimated that almost half of the lost luggage happens on these type flights. The AUC have spoken to BA and BAA, owner of Heathrow Airport, about the problems they have with lost baggage. The one-bag rule has increased the amount of hold luggage and the AUC are sympathetic to the problems with that - and also that Heathrow Airport is running at over maximum capacity. Its expected that the opening of the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow in March will solve BA's problems at the airport and provide passengers with a better service. A spokeman for BAA said [quote] "When terminal five opens one of the significant benefits it will bring will be much needed terminal and infrastructure capacity. We are committed to working with the airline community to develop innovative baggage handling solutions for Heathrow and drive performance". Flying Abroad comment: across most UK airports, lost bags happen in 10-15 of every 1000 items of luggage. Budget airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and bmibaby often use smaller airports where there are less problems with baggage. If you do need to fly long haul and with a connecting flight, try and avoid Heathrow and Gatwick Airport
