Biometric security trials at Heathrow Airport

Wednesday 06 Feb 2008 10:46am

Terminal 1 at London's Heathrow Airport has seen the introduction of a biometic security trial. Passengers on domestic flights within the UK have their fingerprints scanned and recorded at the terminal and then re-checked before boarding. The trial is in place now to iron out any problems before British Airways introduces the scheme at the next Terminal 5 due to open in March 2008. One of the main benefits of the system is that passengers on international flights are unable to board domestic flights by swapping a boarding pass with another passenger. If they try, the boarding pass and biometric/fingerprint details will not match. At present, international and domestic passengers have to be kept separate, but the biometric security will allow both domestic and international passengers to share the same departure lounges. Heathrow's new Terminal 5 opens in March 2008 which boasts new security systems, much bigger departure lounges and aims to drastically reduce waiting times for passengers. The new terminal is designed to handle over 35 million passengers a year.
