British Airways passengers to speed through JFK

Wednesday 03 Dec 2008 7:55am

British Airways has announced that business class passengers will soon enjoy passage straight through New York JFK airport. Business class passengers will have the opportunity to pass through immigration and customs at Shannon Airport, meaning that they will not have to go through the same checks again when they arrive in New York. These advance checks will be possible during BA's flights to New York JFK from London City Airport because there will be a stopover at Shannon airport in the west of Ireland for refuelling. During this time, passengers will have the opportunity to go through the customs and immigration checks that would normally be carried out at their final destination. Shannon airport is the first European airport to be granted the new pre-clearance scheme for flights to the USA. Noel Dempsey, the Irish transport minister, announced the development, which will allow British Airways customers to 'breeze' through the notoriously busy JFK Airport. British Airways' commercial director Robert Boyle said: 'The introduction of pre-clearance facilities at Shannon will mean customers on our business class flights from London City to New York will be able to bypass the normal customs and immigration checks on arrival in the US. 'Many city workers will be able to get from desk to aircraft in as little as 30 minutes at London City. Now it will be more convenient than ever to travel from desk to desk from London City to New York, in unrivalled comfort and style. ' British Airways will operate an Airbus A318 aircraft on the flight route, which will offer one business class cabin. The new service is due to launch in autumn next year and will represent London City's first long-haul route.
