British Airways and Thales in inflight entertainment deal

Tuesday 02 Dec 2008 7:22pm

British Airways has just announced a new deal with Thales, a provider of information technology to the aerospace industry, to install the airline's next generation aircraft with new in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems. The lucrative deal will see BA's planes fitted with larger LCD screens and a multimedia system offering a choice of more than 400 CDs, 300 programmes and 100 films, as well as radio shows and podcasts. There will also be ports for the connection and charging of personal electronic devices installed at every seat throughout each cabin on the airline's new aircraft, as well as power points for laptops. The managing director of Thales UK's aerospace business, Mark Barclay, said that the proposed in-flight entertainment system will 'reinforce British Airways' brand and service in all classes'. 'We are delighted about the selection and anticipate that, together, our two companies will keep raising the bar in this field,' Mr Barclay added. BA's general manager of product management, Jamie Cassidy, said: 'The new Thales IFE system will go way beyond the basics. It is an 'everything on demand' system that lets passengers do what they want, when they want. ' The new systems will be installed on British Airways' next-generation Airbus A380s and 787 Dreamliners, as well as its Boeing 777-300ER planes in 2010.
