Stansted expansion plans get green light

Sunday 19 Oct 2008 8:44am

The government has given Stansted Airport permission to increase its operations to allow passenger numbers of up to 35 million a year on its single runway. The decision was made jointly by secretary of state for communities and local government Hazel Blears and the transport secretary Geoff Hoon. Managing director of Stansted Airport Stewart Wingate said that he was 'delighted' with the decision, which was the result of a full and independent public inquiry. 'With longer term forecasts predicting passenger growth, this decision secures our future and allows us to plan ahead with certainty,' Mr Wingate added. 'This is great news for the millions of leisure and business travellers who depend on Stansted to keep them connected with Europe and the wider world. ' 23 million passengers a year fly to around 165 destinations from Stansted, the most popular destinations include Edinburgh, Glasgow and Rome. Stansted's expansion follows the approval of plans for London City Airport to increase its flight movements to service 120,000 passengers annually.
