Gatwick has the shortest security queues and passengers are happy

Friday 13 Jun 2008 3:56pm

Despite its neighbouring airport, Heathrow, having huge delays and problems with the new Terminal 5 that opened in March this year, Gatwick Airport has the envious reputation as being the airport with the shortest security waiting times of the top ten busiest airports in Europe. The other airports that Gatwick was in competition with included Amsterdam's Schipol airport, Charles de Gaule airport in Paris, Copenhagen's main airport, Madrid and Rome. Andy Flower, Gatwick's managing director said 'It is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our staff at Gatwick that has resulted in this excellent feedback from passengers'. Gatwick has invested in new security technology at the start of the year to help speed up the problems and delays that passengers were experiencing with security screening. Passengers now experience the new x-ray equipment and archway security scanning technology. After security has tightened a few years ago at airports as a result of terrorism threats, passengers were restricted to one item of hand luggage, no liquids in excess of 150ml, no sharp items etc. These restrictions, along with security staff spending longer on screening each passenger resulted in delays and sometimes very long delays for passengers. Gatwick lifted the one-bag rule in March this year, and many of the other UK airports have yet to follow suit. For passengers, it means that their delays from check-in through to departure lounge will be greatly minimised and they can be happy knowing that passengers flying from other airports will be waiting for longer.
