Mini-Guide To Antwerp

Antwerp is the capital of Belgium. It is known as the world's leading diamond city - which is fitting as more the 70% of all diamonds are traded in Antwerp. It is the second city of Belgium (after Brussels), and after Rotterdam it has the second largest port in all of Europe. Getting to Antwerp is no small task, as few airlines fly to Antwerp Airport. The airport is small, only receiving flights to and from London and Rotterdam.

The city has a very long and rich history, and so it has many historical building and interesting museums that are worth a visit. There is the Rubenshuis, a museum of Peter Paul Rubens' art. He was considered to be the prince of baroque in Europe and was a painter, architect, collector, scientist, and more. His home is considered by many to be a window into European culture through the mind of Peter Paul Rubens. Another museum worth a visit is the Plantin Moretus Museum. Is it the home of a 16th century bookbinder and printer, and is dedicated to the history of printing. It has many interesting exhibits. Of course, a visit to Europe would not be complete without seeing a cathedral. The Cathedral of Our Lady is one of the most interesting cathedrals – though construction began in 1351, and the first stage was finished in 1521, the cathedral has never been finished. It does house many fine works of art, including many powerful paintings by Peter Paul Rubens.
