The capital city of Nova Scotia is Halifax. It is the largest city on the Atlantic side of Canada. It has a rich maritime history because of its strategic location and it has a wonderful natural harbor. For the 19th and early 20th centuries, Halifax was the place of entry for immigrants to Canada.

Those coming to Halifax can enter by plane through Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport. It is the largest airport in the Maritime Provinces.

Halifax is also accessible by train, car, bus, and boat (there is a terrific ferry service between Halifax and Dartmouth).

While in Halifax, be sure to see The Halifax Citadel. It is an old fort up on a hill that overlooks the city and harbor, and is an officially recognized historic site. There is a museum and ceremonial garrison.

Another sight to see is the Pier 21. This is the equivalent of Ellis Island in the United States. More than a million immigrants have passed through it. Now it is a museum with many exhibits about Canadian immigrants.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has many artifacts about the sinking of the Titanic and the 1917 Halifax explosion.

Another worthwhile activity while in Halifax is taking in a Halifax Mooseheads game. They are the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team, and they play in the Halifax Metro Centre. Games are played at a near-NHL level, and they are rough and highly skilled.
