The number of people flying with cheap flight airline Ryanair has exceeded 55 million in the last 12 months - and August's traffic number were up 19% to 5.8 million passengers in just one month.

The growth is quite pheonominal especially when you consider that several airlines have gone bust in the last 6-9 months; Silverjet, Maxjet, EOS, Zoom Airlines and several others are finding it extremely difficult with a global credit crunch in affect and also the high cost of fuel.

Ryanair's pricing model is cleverly worded in that they say they will never impose a fuel surcharge on passengers - unlike bigger more traditional airlines such as British Airways.

Ticket prices on Ryanair flights can start of extremely low (for example £10 or 15 Euro), but as tickets get bought, the price starts to rise. Peak time/popular flights are normally more expensive, although if you want to fly at 5am from a small airport, it may not cost you very much at all.

Ryanair said in a statement: "Ryanair’s latest passenger figures show that we continue to grow passenger numbers every month this year. Our rapidly growing passenger numbers come at a time when many airlines, which are facing huge losses, are raising fares and fuel surcharges in an attempt to turn these losses around. However, the reality is that this has driven their passengers to Ryanair. Now even more passengers realise that low fare, fuel surcharge free, travel is still possible – but only with Ryanair."

Ryanair has also announced two new routes from Liverpool's John Lennon Airport to Beauvais in France and Turin in Italy. Both flights will start from the winter season (November and December respectively). These two new flights, which can be booked now, takes the number of Ryanair routes at Liverpool to 46.
