Regional airline Flybe won its second environmental award of the year last week, the 2008 Brussels Airport Environmental Award. Flybe won the accolade in the face of significant competition from rivals including American Airlines, British Airways, Etihad Airways and Lufthansa. The airline’s first eco-friendly award was courtesy of the Budgie Awards, a 'special merit for commitment to the environment'. Flybe is involved in a number of environmental initiatives, including the investment of £1.9 billion in more fuel efficient aircraft, making it one of the most eco-friendly fleets in the world by the end of next year. Flybe’s chief commercial officer Mike Rutter said: "We're honoured to receive this award from Brussels Airport that recognises Flybe's environmental credentials. "Our £1.9 billion investment into a dual type, state-of-the-art environmentally sensitive fleet and the launch of the world's first and only eco-label for the aviation industry, have both contributed to Flybe taking an industry lead and making a significant contribution in this area." Flybe claims to be Europe’s largest and most successful regional airline, with more than 190 routes serving 13 countries.
