Glasgow Airport unveils development plans

With plans to consolidate two terminals, speed up security checks and cater for the growing number of passengers, Glasgow Airport have announced a £30 million expansion plan.

Plans for the new terminal include a bigger duty free shopping area and a unique security screening area for all travellers - with checks taking less than five minutes.

Starting in May 2007, the extension is scheduled to take 18 months and

will replace existing terminal 2 and the walkway linking the two terminals.

The plans include replacing the current three security zones with one large security zone within 18 months - and then the existing three security zones to be converted into bigger and better shops and will also include with improvements to the passenger lounges. This would is planned for 2009.

A spokesman for the airport said: [quote] 'The new central search area on the buildings upper floor will allow us to employ our staff and technology more effectively because all our resources are in one place. This will allow us to reduce queue times and speed up check times.' The new screening zone will be fitted with 14 X-ray machines, four more than present.

This new investment in Glasgow Airport comes at a time when passenger numbers are continuing to grow. The plans are part of a £290 million expansion to take the airport from its existing 9 million passengers to an expected 24 million passengers by 2030.
