Ottawa launches new welcome scheme

Monday 30 March 2009 8:15 AM

A new tourism initiative to offer what has been described as a "warm welcome" has been launched in Canada.

The Welcome to Canada project has been designed to offer travellers to the country a sneak preview of the destinations and experiences on offer.

The project was launched at Macdonald-Cartier Airport in the country’s capital city, Ottawa and forms part of Canada's build-up to the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2010.

The government minister of state for tourism, Diane Ablonczy, said the strategy will "drive tourism and promote Canada as a desirable destination before, during and after the 2010 Winter Games".

Chief executive of Macdonald-Cartier Airport in Ottawa, Paul Benoit, said: "Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport is proud to be the first venue in the country to support this project.

"International visitors arriving in Ottawa will have a first-hand view of some of the great experiences that await them in Canada."

UK travellers can fly to Ottawa with a number of airlines, including Air Canada, American Airlines and Continental Airlines.
