UK Government plane to be scrapped so no more Blair Force One

Wednesday 26 March 2008 11:03 PM
The Junior transport minister repoted today the the UK Government has scrapped plans for "Brown Force One" or "Blair Force One" as it was also known.

"Brown Force One" was meant to be an aircraft capable of flying the UK government ministers or members of the Royal Family on overseas trips.

The two aircraft would have cost £100 million and with rising running costs, a decision was made for ministers or Royal Family to use normal flights for overseas trips as the currently do.

Mr. Fitzpatrick, junior transport minister said "I am today recommending that the needs of the users of this service can best be met through procuring a small aircraft for official travel within the UK, chartered air services for longer journeys involving small parties, and a continuation of existing arrangements with UK airlines for journeys involving large parties."

The Prince Of Wales and also the Prime Minister currently use scheduled flights primarily with British Airways for their flights.

The idea of "Blair Force One" was one of the last acts of Tony Blair as Prime Minister which aimed to give the Prime Minister the safety and security when travelling that the US President has with Air Force One.

In a concession, the Government and Royal Family will be able to but small jets to seat 10-15 people for use within the UK.

There has been no comment from The Queen - although she has been long understood to be pressing for a new aircraft.

The Royal household, Downing Street and the Foreign office all worked closely together to reach the decision.
