American Airlines moves all flights from Gatwick to Heathrow

The airline currently operates some flights from Heathrow already, but this consolidation will have all American Airlines flights from London operating from a single airport - Heathrow.

The announcement by the airline is timed to take advantage of the new Open Skies pact between the EU and USA which allows any airline to fly services across the Atlantic from Europe and from any city in Europe.

The Open Skies pact comes into effect at the end of March and the airline is expected to announce new flights from Heathrow.

Tim Smith from American Airlines said [quote] "Other airlines are in the process of announcing new flights to Heathrow and switching some of their London capacity in that direction".

The move away from Gatwick will happen at the same time that British Airways moves its Heathrow operations in the newly built Terminal 5 which is geared up to handling many more passengers - and will help to improve British Airway's operations at the airport.

American Airlines is a well established traditional airline providing primarily destinations around the USA and long haul flights - including transatlantic flights to the UK from its bases in America.
