Airports must shorten security queues

Sunday 11 March 2007 10:46 PM
In a stiff warning from regulators, both Heathrow and Gatwick airports came under fire for the length of queues at security gates at the airports.

Security rules across the whole of the UK's airports were tightened last year after an alleged plot to blowup planes flying across the atlantic. As a result, queues at security in BAA's airports have on occasions been more than 2 hours.

BAA, owner of Heathrow and Gatwick, has been forced to reduce queuing time by half, or face financial fines from regulators.

Although reduced queuing time will be greatly welcomed by passengers, it will come at a cost. BAA have said they will provide over 1000 additional security staff and equipment to cater for the increased rush over the summer. These additional staff need to be funded in some form, and its likely that airlines will be charged extra - who will in turn pass any additional costs onto the passengers.
