Despite announcing 40 new routes for this winter, Ryanair said it will ground about 10% of its aircraft over the winter period as it would be cheaper to keep them on the ground than fly them. Increasing airport costs at Stansted and Dublin are to blame for this decision with Stansted's owner, BAA, doubling landing and handling fees.
It is not yet known exactly what flights/routes will be affected but they will be reported here when the details are announced.
Ryanair's chairman, Michael O'Leary has been vocal in his concern over the increased landing charges at airport and daftly high oil prices which makes fuel prices high. He has pledged that the airline will absorb as much of the increased cost as possible, even if it results in a drop in profits for the airline. He has also said that he expects some airlines to go out of business because of the increased fuel costs where airlines with cash reserves, cheaper economic planes and dynamic management are likely to survive.
Business class online airline Silverjet filed for bankruptcy last week with debts of £40 million after last minute investment failed to materialise.
