Early morning flights between Newcastle Airport and Southampton announced

Tuesday 28 July 2009 7:13 AM

Flights at the crack of dawn will now be available for passengers flying from Southampton International Airport to Newcastle Airport.

The carrier which has already announced extra flights from Liverpool Airport to Southampton, Eastern Airways, will commence the new flights in July.

The hubs of Liverpool and Southampton will also be connected by a further three flights per week which are scheduled to start in the first week of July.

When questioned on the reasoning behind these early morning flights Chris Holliday, the chief operating officer at the airline, said there was a "gap in the market for early morning departures".

He further added, "Adjusting the timings allows our Southampton passengers to arrive in Newcastle city centre before 9am and helps maximise their time in the north-east".

The flight, designed for the business traveller, will depart at 7am and is hoped to be viable enough to be available everyday of the year.

The carrier fought off competition from 65 rivals to be awarded the crown of Europe's number one regional airline for 2006.

Recently a bizarre publicity stunt announced the opening of a new flight route from Newcastle hub to Sharm el Sheikh, in Turkey, earlier in the month.

A public belly dancing lesson on a massive scale was organised by Jet2.com to publicise the new route.
