Birmingham airport celebrates at 25 years

Birmingham Airport is toasting its birthday today during a year which has dual importance for the hub, with two milestones reached.

It was 25 years ago, after a mammoth £29 million construction project that the hub’s current terminal was opened.

The airport also celebrates its 70th anniversary this year following its establishment in 1939.

Birmingham Airport’s chief executive, Paul Kehoe, said that the hub had witnessed a lot of change in its 25 years.

He added that this year also marked the inauguration of a new £40 million International Pier.

Commenting on how important he thought this was to the airport he said: "hopefully people will look back in another 25 years and recognise 2009 as a historic year in the development of the airport".

Since the terminal opened in 1984, passenger numbers have soared to more than eight million.

The chief executive deemed the milestones were even more "poignant" because the airport had secured planning permission for an extension on the runway.

Birmingham International also made recent headlines when passengers were left marooned by a taxi strike.
