Baggage still being lost at Heathrow Terminal 5

Thursday 10 July 2008 3:33 PM

Despite being open for almost 4 months, there are still problems with baggage at Heathrow's terminal 5 where its claimed over 900 bags a day are lost.

Unite, the trade union, estimated that 65-70 bags out of every 1000 bags don't get onto the plane, and over 80 in every 1000 bags for connecting flights don't get there.

The opening of the new Terminal 5 in March this year was highly criticised as a "national humiliation" with the major delays, hundreds of cancelled flights, over 10,000 bags gone missing and a catalogue of disasters.

Although the service has now greatly improved, the new figures of 900 bags a day going missing is a sign that there is still much more improvement to be made - and that there is no alternative in that they have to improve.

For passengers travelling through Heathrow, if travelling as a couple, we would advise splitting your items of luggage across your partners suitcase so if one suitcase does got missing, you aren't left completely without anything and will have some belongings.
