Airline body attacks security at UK Airports
Monday 30 July 2007 9:39 PM
IATA (the International Air Transport Association) have attacked security at UK airports citing that it does not improve security and only increases inconvenience for passengers.IATA specifically mention that BAA, owner of several UK airports, continues to deliver embarassingly low service levels because they have failed to invest in the necessary equipment and staff to meet demand. The UK is the only country in the world to impose a one piece of hand luggage restriction and IATA's criticism is related to this restriction - even though it has been introduced by the UK government. Introduced in August 2006, the one piece of hand-luggage per passenger has caused numerous delays with passengers arriving unprepared and with multiple bags in attempting to get through airport security. The UK government has spent £1.5 million in advertising campaigns to remind passengers of the restrictions. BAA has invested over £20 million in the last 12 months on improviing airport security and providing more lanes and staff to handle the additional work needed with the more stringent security restrictions. With record numbers of passengers expected to fly in the July and August holiday season, airport security will inevitably cause delays for passengers.
