Monday 12 January 2009 8:13 AM

The application of Brussels Airlines to join the Star Alliance coalition of airlines has been accepted by the chief executives of existing member airlines.

Brussels Airlines runs some 300 daily flights to 55 destination airports in Europe and 15 African locations.

Brussels Airlines’ managing director Bernard Gustin said that the airline was "very happy" with the outcome of its application and looked forward to passing on the advantages of Star Alliance membership to its customers.

Chief executive of United Airlines, Glenn Tilton chaired the board meeting that saw the successful vote on Brussels Airlines' application. Mr Tilton said: "Brussels Airlines further strengthens the Star Alliance by offering greater connectivity throughout Europe and Africa to better serve the international travel needs of all our customers."

The German airline Lufthansa will be assisting the Belgian Airlines’ integration into Star Alliance.

Passengers flying with Brussels Airlines in future can expect to experience a number of related benefits, including access to "seamless" flight connections across the Star Alliance network of 1,074 destinations.
