easyJet carries almost 3 million passengers in December

Thursday 10 January 2008 8:06 AM
Following Ryanair's announcement of record passenger numbers for December, easyJet have today announced their December traffic figures.

Over 2.9 million passengers were carried on easyJet 300+ routes around Europe which is almost a 10% increase on December the previous year.

Global demand for cheap flights, including an increasing demand and competition in cheap flights around Europe has resulted in many of the bigger low-cost carriers carrying more passengers each year.

2007 saw easyJet carry almost 38.2 million passengers in the 12 month period - up over 13.5% compared to the previous year.

Christmas and New Year are always busy periods for travelling and the period in 2008 has been no exception.

Although easyJet has seen a healthy growth in passenger numbers, competitor airline Ryanair say growth close to 20%.

The crucial measure of "load factor" (which is a percentage of how full each plan is when it flies) was down 2.2% in December - an indication that on average, each flight had 3 less people on it than the previous year.

easyJet shares were down 7% on the London stock market when the figures were announced.
