Saturday 9 February 2008 2:34 PM
Business Class only airline Silverjet that operates flights from London Luton to New York and London Luton and Dubai, celebrated its first birthday at the end of January 2008.

The airline operates two flights to New York each day, and is the first airline to offer a private terminal at both ends of the flight between London Luton and Dubai airports.

In January 2008, the airline carried over 60,000 passengers compared to just 8,000 in its first month a year ago.

Load factor stood at 58% in january 2008 - meaning that only 58% of seats were sold on average on each flights.

The airline has won numerous awards in its first year, including "Best Airline" award from The Sunday Times.

The airline takes delivery of two new aircraft in March 2008 which are extended range planes capable to flying over 6,000 miles - making destinations such as Delhi, Los Angeles and Shanghai within reach.

Lawrence Hunt, Chief Executive of Silverjet said [quote] "We are extremely proud of our record achievements for a start up airline in our first year of flying." ..... "During January, traditionally one of the quietest month’s for long haul travel, our very successful 'Very Sivilised Sale' resulted in 18,131 forward sectors booked, more than double (up 132%) December 2007".

Commenting on the profitablity of the airline, Lawrence said that he expected the airline to achieve profitability in March 2008.

Silverjet also received an indirect approval of its business model on the announcement by British Airways that it will start a London (City Airport) to New York service next year - which similarly to Silverjet will also be a 100% business-class only service.
