JetAmerica bucks trends with smaller US cities

Tuesday 4 August 2009 7:13 AM

By the middle of this summer mid-seized American cities that were formerly ignored by larger airlines will be serviced by a newly formed one. JetAmerica, based in the state Florida, announced that, beginning July 13, it will commence non-stop service to 34 mid size American cities, including: Lansing, Michigan, Melbourne, Florida, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Newark, New Jersey, South Bend, Indiana, and Toledo, Ohio. Twenty-eight of the flights will either begin or end at Newark Liberty International hub. Starting on August 14, the airline will introduce another six flights - from Toledo to Minneapolis.

In an attempt to reverse the trend that has seen daily flights fall from 35 to 12 at the capital region airport, JetAmerica is targeting medium and smaller cities such as Lansing. The same decline is being experienced around the entire US, while airfares from the same airports have gone up significantly.

“JetAmerica will provide direct access to New York City for business travellers in Lansing and nonstop access to central Florida for the city’s leisure travellers,” remarked Robert Selig, who is the head of the Capital Region Airport Authority.

“We don’t have access to either one right now,” he commented. “So, this is going to fill a major void in our schedule.”
