Manchester airport supports Metrolink expansion scheme

Reports suggest a proposed scheme to enhance transport links in Manchester has gained backing from the city’s airport.

The Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) is a 107-strong faction called ‘United City’ that Manchester airport is part of, which is supporting plans to extend Manchester’s Metrolink light rail network to the hub.

Andrew Cornish, Manchester airport managing director said: "Improving the way that our passengers and staff access the airport is a key objective of our master plan to 2030. A successful TIF bid would enable us to reach our targets within the next five years."

However, the TIF project could face opposition from consumer groups because the Metrolink extension is intended to be implemented alongside a congestion charge scheme similar to London’s.

Some of the other organisations involved in ‘United City’ include British Airways, SSP UK Air, Alpha Airports and VLM Airlines.
Manchester airport hopes that with this new transport scheme, passenger numbers over the next 20 years will reach 50 million.
