No more 1p flights from Ryanair

Wednesday 8 August 2007 8:19 PM
Cheap flights are here to stay with airlines such as easyJet, Flybe, bmibaby and Wizzair offering very cheap flights across Europe.

However, Ryanair has come under criticism from passengers and trading standards for advertising flights for 1p or 2p when the true cost is substantially more (in the region of £30+) once taxes and charges are added on.

easyJet and Flybe websites have changed recently to quote the total fare at all stages of the booking process online - a move welcomed by passengers and trading standards groups.

Historically, airlines have tempted passengers to book on a whim by offering very low costs - with the statistics showing that as many as 1 in 10 people never turn up for the flight. As a result, the airline keeps the taxes and other charges the passenger has paid - because they don't infact fly.

The extent of the problem has caused the European Commission to investigate budget airlines amid concerns that passengers are being misled.

Its expected that the Commission will legislate that all taxes and charges must be quoted at all stages of the booking process.

Ryanair are expected to change to this new all inclusive practice in early 2008 when their new booking system is introduced.
