Situated in the West Midlands of England, Birmingham is the second biggest city in the UK with a population of just over 1 million people.The city has a long standing background in manufacturing and engineering, although today its economy is based around the sevice sector. During the industrial revolution, Birmingham became a key junction in England's canal network with the city even today having more miles of canals than Venice.

Places on interest in Birmingham include the Canal Basin, the Sea Life centre, Birmingham Museum, Bull Ring shopping centre and Rep Theatre Birmingham city centre is promdominently pedestrianised or under cover. A wide range of shops are located in the recently developed Bull Ring shopping centre. The city hosts approximately 40% of all UK conferences and exhibitions thanks to the National Exhibition Centre and International Convention Centre - both based in the area. Getting to and from Birmingham is easy with road, rail and flight being within easy reach. Birmingham is surrounded by the M6, M5 and M40 networks which provide quick access northwards to Manchester, southwards to Bristol and eastwards to Coventry and London. The city's New Street station provides a plethora of platforms and connections and regular services to many of the UK's cities. London is less than 2 hours by train from the city. Birmingham Airport (BHX) is located a 20 minute journey eastwards from the city centre. The airport offer regular domestic and international flights.
