Situated in the north of the country and about 30-40 minutes from the German border, Zurich is the banking capital of Switzerland. Despite this, its not a boring city by any means and is infact surprisingly hip and trendy.The city is at the edge of lake Zurich and has hundreds of bars, restaurants and clubs. The main language in Zurich is Swiss-German or Schwyzertütsch as its commonly known. This language purely a spoken language and high-German is used when it needs to be written down.

English is widely spoken in shops, restaurants and any of the main services.Getting around Zurich is very easy with a comprehensive tram system that covers the city from edge to edge. Alternatively you can use the bus system in and around the city to get to the areas not reached by trams. Infact its common for people to use a mixture of trams and buses when travelling around. Zurich railway station provides regular services to Basel, Geneva, Lugano and other towns and cities across the country as well as to destinations further afield such as the night-train to Berlin. Travel tickets can be bought either at the main railway station or at ticket machines next to each bus or tram stop. Public transport in Zurich and the rest of Switzerland runs to Swiss precision and you can almost set your watch to it. Trains are rarely cancelled and even snow doesn't affect the service. There are lots of things to do and see in Zurich including: - Niederdorfstrasse, the cobbled streets and old part of the city - Uetliberg, the mountain overlooking the city offers spectacular views - Lake Zurich, with crystal clear waters this land-locked lake even has ferries on it! - The Zoo - a short tramride out of the city to the hills. The currency is NOT Euros in Switzerland - the currency is Swiss-Franc (CHF).
