Mini-Guide To Frankfurt
Frankfurt is a city with a world wide reputation as a financial centre. It is also closely associated with industry and commerce. It has a very urban, modern skyline with skyscrapers and very tall buildings. Yet it is also a very interesting place for people to visit and due to the fact that it is not widely regarded as a standard ‘tourist’ destination, it is a very charming place to visit and enjoy a very relaxing stay. There is an excellent public transport system in Frankfurt, with a suburban over ground railway and an underground system as well. This allows you to move around without much difficulty. Taxis are also common and not too expensive, or you could even think about hiring a bike. However, within the centre, it is possible to see most of Frankfurt on foot and you get a good feel to the city, in a way which you don’t when using public transport or in a car.

Frankfurt is basically divided into north and south, with the River Main, on which it sits, also being the dividing line. There are some old buildings to be seen, since this is a city which has existed in some way or another for around 1200 years. However, a lot of the city was bombed during the Second World War and was not reconstructed, but modernised, hence its use of skyscrapers etc. Frankfurt is a very multi-cultural city, with around 25% of its population being foreign. This has resulted in English being widely spoken as a ‘common’ language, so English speakers will not find any real problems with communication. It is also a year round destination, since its climate is quite mild and it is not subject to extremes of temperature. It is also a city where there is a lot to see and do. Frankfurt is often referred to as the Jazz Capital of Europe, so if you are into jazz, then Frankfurt will be right up your street, with lots of venues and live music sessions. There are also a fair few museums in Frankfurt. One of the most popular is the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (The Museum of German Architecture) which looks at the evolution of Germany and how architecture has evolved and helped to shape the country. A really fascinating experience. Other attractions include some of the older buildings, such as the Alte Oper, which is basically the Opera House and was built in 1880. Despite the fact that it has had a bit of a rocky ride at times, it is still going and home to some great operatic and jazz performances. When in Frankfurt, you really should check out the food as well. There are lots of great regional dishes to be tried (not just frankfurters….) and you should also check out the Apfelwein, apple wine, which is actually more like cider and a great drink to sample. So simply enjoy all the delights that Frankfurt has to offer and make sure that you keep coming back to sample the warm welcome and great food!
