Cairo is a city which has delighted and enthralled visitors for a long, long time and it really does live up to its promise of being full of eastern promise, many surprises and is a mystical and exciting place to visit. It is the capital of Egypt and it is a large, sprawling metropolis with over 17 million people. It also has a very long and proud history, having been founded around the year 969 AD. Yet it also has a very modern feel to it, with many skyscrapers having been built in recent times, as well as some very modern buildings which have changed the face of a large part of Cairo.

The climate in Cairo is not quite as hot as you may first suspect, although during the months of June, July and August it can be very hot at almost 40 º C. However, from mid September to December the temperature drops and by December it is often down to less than 20 º, which makes these months the ideal time to visit. There is so much to see and do in Cairo, that you really will find it hard to cram everything in. The Pyramids, which lie just outside the city are the most wonderful sight and easily accessible from Cairo. These are absolutely a cannot miss attraction and should be the first thing that you do. Shopping in Cairo is a real experience; Cairo really does come into its own during the evening and this is the most popular time to shop. So you can haggle in the souks and enjoy the ancient game of bartering. The souks can be thronged with people, so make sure that you keep personal belongings safe. The best shopping and the most entertainment, can be found in the Khan el-Khalili area, which is a very ancient part of the city and here bartering has taken place for hundreds of years, so why not join in? There are lots of cultural things to do in Cairo, the Egyptian Museum has many thousands of ancient relics on display and the historical importance of some of the exhibits is simply amazing. Here you will find yourself amazed at the advanced culture of the ‘Ancient’ Egyptians. Old Cairo is also a fascinating place. Part of Old Cairo was actually a city known as Fustat before Cairo was even founded. You can also see the Babylon Fortress in this part of the City, which is a stunning Roman fortress (despite its name). You should also make time to see the Cairo Tower, which is on the island of Gezira sited on the River Nile. But you should also make time to take in a little of the café culture of Cairo and enjoy the vast range of foods on offer. So with exciting attractions, an excellent public transport system (as well as very cheap taxis) and some great restaurants and cafes, Cairo really is the place to come for an absolutely unforgettable trip.
